American Guerrilla - Friends of the King and Enemies of the Crown
Hours: Sessions: 8 Fee: $99.00 Description:
In their very first conflict as an independent people, the Americans displayed impressive prowess in guerrilla warfare. The contribution made by American guerrillas to the climactic events of the War of Independence, especially the bagging of Cornwallis at Yorktown, was substantial, even essential. Yet for some reason, their story remains little known. In addition, the war suggests, across more than two centuries, certain fundamental difficulties impeding even great powers when they confront a major guerrilla challenge. The American struggle for independence from Britain had its origins above all in a key factor the destruction of the French and Indian menace in North America. This eight-week course will explore the irregular warfare that plagued the American colonies beginning with the French & Indian War and into the American Revolution. Areas of focus: The Frontier of New York & Canada, North and South Carolina with Georgia included.

Hours: Sessions: 4 Fee: $49.00 Description:
While historians work primarily with documents, works of art are historical sources, too. They offer the viewer a glimpse of the past and can provide valuable social, economic, cultural and political context of the times. This course will explore history through the lens of art produced during particular moments. As a class, we will look, share, analyze and contextualize specific works of art. Then we will connect the works to the “moment” they were created, as well as broader societal and global processes. Specifically, we will examine, analyze, and reflect on works of Dutch Golden Age of Art; paintings and engravings from the Revolutionary Atlantic world; the Interwar era (between World War I and II); and the 20thcentury Chinese Communist Revolution. Highlighted artists will include but are not limited to: Diego Rivera; Fu Baoshi; Rembrandt, Vermeer, Gustav Klimpt, Jacques Louise-David, Francisco Goya. Note: A separate course on female artists will be offered as part of the Women in World History series (Fall 2024).

How did the Second World War affect Georgia? What role did Georgia have in military training, war production, shipyards, etc? Why did more Americans die from Nazi U Boat attacks off the coast of the U.S. than perished at Pearl Harbor? Who was the James Bond type spy that tried to warn the FBI about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor? How many gallons of gas were you allowed to have each week? You wouldn’t get far. In this two-part course, we will examine the underlying causes of World War II, including its roots in World War I. We’ll look at the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, the rise of Mussolini, and the rise of the Japanese militarists. We’ll examine how and why appeasement failed. We’ll also look at the outbreak of the war, the American attempt at neutrality, the road to Pearl Harbor, the electrifying Doolittle Raid, Allied strategy, the successes and failures of strategic bombing and major campaigns in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. We’ll examine the home front, including Georgia’s role. We’ll also look at the Manhattan Project, the decision to use the atomic bomb, and the myriad results of the war, including how it altered life, not just for Americans, but for many of those around the world. Part I will end with the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. Most of the European and Pacific theaters of the war will be covered in part II of the course, as well as most of the home front, results of the war, including new inventions.

Hours: Sessions: 8 Fee: $69.00 Description:
All great events hinge on success. However, in many cases, the success is preceded by mistakes which give rise to the great events that follow. From over 80 years of hindsight, historians have found that World War II was filled with near catastrophic mistakes on both sides of the conflict. Many were often overlooked during the conduct of the war for various reasons such as national morale and propaganda. Some were caused by hubris and some were unexpected. Regardless, they were mistakes by which lives were lost or time was added to the eventual victory by the Allies. Studying these mistakes today may be the best way to ensure they do not happen tomorrow.

Beyond the Frame: Understanding History through Art

We’ll look at the Manhattan Project and the controversial decision to use the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The home front will be examined, including Georgia’s role (training at Camp Toccoa, the Bell Bomber plant, and Nazi u boats and saboteurs off the Georgia coast). We’ll look at the many ways the war changed the lives of everyday Americans. Finally, we’ll look at the results of the war, including how it set the stage for a near half century of Cold War and the myriad war time inventions (did you know that actress Hedy Lamar was the “mother of Wi-Fi”?).

It will concentrate on capturing a likeness in fresh vibrant flesh tones in oils or pastels while working from photos. Instructor demos, slide presentations, lectures and critiques are intended to enhance students' self expression so they can take their skills to the next level. Mr. Varner has studied with many of today’s portrait masters and brings all of those skills to the classroom to add to each student’s quest for personal expression.

It's Your Constitution, Use It or Lose It!
Hours: Sessions: 8 Fee: $69.00 Description:
The founders gave us a great Constitution. However, if you do not know your rights then it is all for naught. So called experts will tell you this-and-that and they are frequently wrong. In approximately 89 days of work during the summer of 1787, the delegates from the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia and crafted the shortest and most timeless governing document in the history of the world. In approximately 4500 words they crafted a document that has governed the United States for some 237 years with only 27 changes. One amendment lingered for over 200 years before ratification. In this relaxed interactive class, you will come to understand how you are supposed to be governed by your federal government.
