New Pedorthist Certificate
We’re always innovating to create new Healthcare certificate programs, and one of our newest is the only one of its kind in the state. The Pedorthist Certificate program, which prepares you to specialize in patient foot care, is one of only four accredited training courses in the country and the only one in Georgia. Uniquely partnered with Foot Solutions Academy of Pedorthic Science, we are proud to offer a class that covers a variety of topics essential to a skilled pedorthist:
- A review of human anatomy with a focus on the feet
- The theory and practice of orthotics
- Custom design and modifications of therapeutic shoes using CAD/CAM technology
- Related subjects such as biomechanics, kinesiology and patient evaluation
What is a pedorthist?
A successful pedorthist specializes in comprehensive patient foot care using therapeutic footwear and supportive orthotic devices — for example, arch supports. A pedorthist also creates therapeutic shoes, foot orthoses, custom shoes, ankle-foot orthotics and fillers for partial foot amputations.
Terry Reed, a 2014 graduate of the program, said the course was very helpful in providing the necessary classroom knowledge for a successful pedorthic practice.
“No stone was left unturned from anatomy to orthotics to Medicare guidelines and everything in between,” he said. “The lab time was very informative, giving hands-on exposure to a wide variety of equipment and various methodologies for working with peoples’ feet.”
Students get hands-on experience using CAD/CAM technology in a working orthotics, fitting and technology production facility. The comprehensive 140-hour program takes three weeks to complete. It is also eligible for VA Education Benefits.
