OLLI’s Golden Social
May 23: Save the date for a memorable night — our 50th OLLI social! Drawing inspiration from the 30 members of the first social in 1999 for OLLI (then called Golden University), the social’s theme will be the “Golden.”
Plans for the evening include a delicious buffet dinner, socializing, dancing and live music in the decorated ballroom at KSU Center (3333 Busbee Drive). Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with entertainment, dancing and socializing from 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Semi-formal attire is encouraged, and prizes will be given for the most uniquely dressed (based on the theme). Our guests will walk the red carpet as they enter a room decorated in gold.
OLLI has been a continuous program of knowledge and excellence. Classes and social programs are offered year round. They not only nourish the mind but also the body and soul.
“OLLI provides a climate where friendships thrive, the intellect is enriched, the body is strengthened and the spirit is nurtured as more than 60 classes and special interest programs are offered each semester,” Donna McIntosh, OLLI administrative associate, said.
Credit for what the program is today is given to the aforementioned group and their many suggestions, which included taking classes with fellow seniors and socializing with other seniors in a comfortable environment. OLLI has been designed in accordance with the group’s ideas, which has resulted in a successful program. In 1999 enrollees totaled at 478, which included classes and socials. In 2015, class enrollments reached a high of 1,000. Socials alone have gone from 30 to 250 attendees.
“Much credit has to be give to Dean Barbara Calhoun for her support and the wonderful people who have contributed,” said Dick Harp, OLLI director, “I personally treasure the many friends I have made over the years and the wonderful people I have met. We hope the socials have provided much pleasure for all our members. We will strive to continue these events.”
