Pat Summitt Online Leadership Program Introduced at KSU
“Attitude is a choice. What you think you can do, whether positive or negative, confident or scared, will most likely happen.” Pat Summitt
Legendary basketball coach. Trailblazer. Champion. These are just a few words that come to mind when we think about Pat Summitt. But coaching the Lady Vols basketball team to an unprecedented 1,098 wins and eight NCAA championships was just the beginning of Pat’s extraordinary impact. Her players, and countless others who have been touched by her competitive spirit, strength of character and courage in the face of adversity, are stronger leaders today because of her unwavering commitment to excellence on the basketball court and in life. Some of Pat’s distinguished awards include:
- Arthur Ashe Courage Award
- Coach of the Century
- Presidential Medal of Freedom
- U.S. News & World Report’s Top 50 Women Leaders in America
- Working Mother Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Working Mothers
The Definite Dozen©
Growing up on a dairy farm, Pat learned the value of hard work. Those early lessons, along with her coaching career at Tennessee led her to develop rules for life, known as the “Definite Dozen.” This approach to leadership and success was first introduced to the public in 1998 in Pat’s book, “Reach for The Summitt: The Definite Dozen System for Succeeding at Whatever You Do.”
The Definite Dozen© principles for success include:
- Be A Competitor
- Take Full Responsibility
- Learn To Be A Great Communicator
- Develop and Demonstrate Loyalty
- Respect Yourself and Others
- Put the Team Before Yourself
- Discipline Yourself So No One Else Has To
- Make Hard Work Your Passion
- Don’t Just Work Hard, Work Smart
- Change Is A Must
- Handle Success Like You Handle Failure
- Make Winning An Attitude
