Rising to the rank of lieutenant general, James Longstreet participated in most of the battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. During this course, we will explore Longstreet’s military career from his days at West Point, his involvement in the Mexican-American War, the various battles he participated in during the American Civil War, and his postwar life in Gainesville, Georgia. As a Civil War historian, author, newspaper columnist, and instructor, Michael K. Shaffer remains a member of the Society of Civil War Historians, Historians of the Civil War Western Theater, and Georgia Association of Historians. He serves as a Civil War consultant for the River Line Historic Area and the Friends of Camp McDonald. Shaffer holds BA and MA degrees – with honors -in Military History: Civil War Studies. He frequently lectures to various groups, and currently teaches Civil War courses at Kennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education.
