Watercolor with Pen & Ink
This class is designed for students who have prior watercolor experience using pen, ink, or paint. Students will be taught how to add clarity to their drawings and how to add sparks of color effectively. To make transportation easier, supplies are permitted to be left in the classroom during this workshop. –> Supply list for the course:
Paper140 lb. or heavier cold press watercolor paper (no texture) or smooth illustration board Sketch book or paper for sketching
Watercolor Brushes(Make sure you buy “watercolor brushes”) one, round brush size 8 or 10 (size of brush is flexible, depending on the size of painting) one, 1-inch flat brush ¼-inch flat
Paints(small tube of best quality you can afford, Winsor & Newton is a reliable brand, but there are others). At minimum, you should have at least one of each primary color, two is preferred (1 warm and 1 cool). Cool Warm Lemon Yellow Aureolin Permanent Rose Cadmium Red Deep Cobalt Blue Fr. Ultramarine Blue Burnt Sienna Raw Sienna Palette to store paints and mix paints (get one with deep wells and large mixing area) – can substitute with white Styrofoam plates
Pens and InkYour choice – there are many fine pens at your art stores. You will need at least a fine point and a medium point pen. Ink needs to be waterproof. For this class, I will be using black India ink, but you can use Sepia as well. A small ink well/dish/palette, if you are using a dip pen.
Miscellaneous1 board (gator board, waterproofed masonite, etc.) cut about 1 inch larger than your watercolor paper (so you can use the clamps to hold paper on board) 4 bulldog clamps to stretch paper to board 1 board (gator board, waterproofed masonite, etc.) cut about 1-inch larger than your watercolor paper Masking agent, like Miskit or something similar (I like Incredible White Mask best) Small bar of soap Small spray bottle for water Roll of paper towel Pencil (#2B) and kneaded eraser Black permanent marker (fine tip) Sponge (rectangular kitchen) Plastic water container (cut up an old milk jug) Bag to transport all of your supplies
