From Blueprint Dreams to Digital Reality: Discover AutoCAD with DiscoverU
Picture this: You’re standing in front of a towering skyscraper, marveling at its sleek lines and innovative design. What if we told you that every curve, angle, and precise detail started as lines on a computer screen? This is the fascinating world of AutoCAD, where imagination takes digital shape.
AutoCAD is the most widely used computer-aided design (CAD) software for producing architectural, engineering, and construction drawings.
This summer, give your teen the chance to unlock what’s possible in a career with AutoCAD at KSU Community and Professional Education’s DiscoverU — a hands-on summer camp for rising high schoolers grades 9 through 12. At DiscoverU, they will build real-world skills and experience college life in a fun, interactive setting.

We’re thrilled to welcome back Erick Hohler, our beloved AutoCAD instructor, for another summer. Erick guides students into the world of architecture, engineering, and design, showing them how lines on a screen become buildings, bridges, and other innovations.
What Your Teen Will Experience
Your teen can look forward to stepping into our computer lab at the KSU Center and diving into AutoCAD, the industry-standard software professionals use to bring designs to life.
During the AutoCAD camp at DiscoverU, students will:
- Learn the Basics: 2D drafting, precision drawing, and basic 3D modeling
- Navigate AutoCAD – Practice navigating AutoCAD’s interface, creating technical drawings, and applying core design principles
- Create a Project – Build a portfolio-ready project to showcase new skills with personalized instructor guidance
- Explore Careers – Gain valuable instructor insights about paths in engineering, architecture, and product design.

No Experience Needed!
This camp is made especially for students interested in exploring what a future in architecture, engineering, or design might look like. No experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to learn. It serves as an excellent opportunity for students to gain exposure to engineering and design principles before deciding if it is a major or degree they want to study.
Students interested in further honing their AutoCAD skills can explore enrolling in KSU’s Community and Professional Education AutoCAD Certificate courses.
Instructor Q&A with Erick Hohler
A: It exposes students to engineering principles such as 2D and 3D design, allowing them to gain insights into what it would be like to have a career in engineering and architectural design.
A: The main skills students learn are not only how to use the AutoCAD software but also learning 2D and 3D design and various engineering principles that can be applied to a variety of fields. This includes learning to lay out drawings, dimensions, and annotations to provide clear details on a variety of disciplines such as architecture and manufacturing. It also teaches students to think like an engineer and gain exposure to how it might be done in an actual industry.
A: My favorite topic is teaching students how to convert 2D layouts into 3D shapes and drawings and showing how 2D shapes transition into 3D objects.
