Go behind the curtain of a healthcare career

In our Medical Skills camp, students discover what it's like to work in a hospital, urgent care, or doctor's office. Our nurse instructor, Fikera Gerald — known as "Nurse G" to her students — is joining us for another summer to share her industry experience and first-hand knowledge with our DiscoverU 2026 students.

This camp introduces students to basic medical terminology and safe practices, while encouraging them to envision a future in medicine and helping them discover their next steps.

What students will learn

In Medical Skills at DiscoverU, students will:

• Explore the diverse array of career options in the medical field
• Practice taking vital signs and completing patient assessments
• Examine specimens under microscopes
• Set up and place items into a sterile field
• Practice medical knot tying as well as suture and staple removal
• Engage in a hands-on bandaging and wound dressing lab
• Practice correct PPE donning and doffing methods
• Attend a Stop the Bleed presentation with KSU's Office of Emergency Management
• Learn Basic Life Support CPR/AED skills with KSU's Office of Emergency Management
