Revisit many of the bands and songs that made the 1960s a period of fast-paced revolving music. AM radio and 45 RPM records were kings. Bands and artists seem to pop out of nowhere, then disappear into music obscurity. The song titles and music were sometimes as weird as the band names, but many well-known artists would come from this era. This 8-part course follows the years 1960 to 1969 with videos and a brief history of each song and band. Leave your penny loafers, tie-dyes, and paisley at home, but bring your moves and memories, as well as your notebook. Course recommended for music history buffs.

OLLI Lunch & Learn Lecture Series
Hours: Sessions: 1 Fee: $n/a Description:
Write a Novel in 30 Minutes! Wait. Write an entire novel in thirty minutes? It’s gotta be AI, right? Artificial Intelligence? Nope. It’s way better than AI because everyone plays a part in the process. Everyone. And the results are hilarious! Why let a computer have all the fun? OLLI instructor Josh Langston, a writer with 20 published novels, has done this presentation for years. He’s worked with writers’ groups, civic and social clubs, church groups, school classes, and more. If they weren’t fun, do you think he’d keep doing ‘em? He’ll simplify the major parts of a novel and cover what makes things tick. The fun begins when the audience does the plotting. Josh manages the process, but the crowd drives it. Bring a brown bag lunch, invite a friend, and join us for this informative, interesting, and free lecture! Registration is required.

Hours: Sessions: 4 Fee: $49.00 Description:
With over 3500 years of written record, China, the “Middle Kingdom,” has the longest continuous history of any country in the world. Yet until the early twentieth century, Chinese dynastic rule followed a fairly set pattern. This course begins by tracing what led to the 1911 revolution that ended the Qing Dynasty and follows the establishment of the Republic of China, the Chinese civil war, and the revolution that led to the 1949 Communist Revolution. How did the subsequent challenges of the Great Leap Forward (1958-1962), the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), and other such programs lead, ultimately, to yet another dramatic break? How did this next upheaval put once-isolated China on the path to modernization and global prominence? This course also will examine the effect of revolutionary times on Chinese culture and society.

Hours: Sessions: 6 Fee: $59.00 Description:
Then, Now, And the Future. The U.S. Constitution establishes three separate branches of the government for checks and balances. Alexander Hamilton said the Supreme Court will be the least powerful because it has no sword or purse. Thomas Jefferson stated that Judicial Review was a dangerous precedent. Were these Founders right? Has the Supreme Court exceeded its original intent, and does it legislate from the bench? Were the branches intended to be co-equal? This class will review the judicial process, some past rulings, and anticipate some to come.

Hours: Sessions: 6 Fee: $59.00 Description:
In this second part, we'll continue to examine some of the most serious blunders of World War II, analyzing their impacts on the war's progression and the decisions behind them. Did it cost additional casualties, was it poor planning by the individual leaders or did necessity drive it? Some were obviously honest efforts, some were politically motivated, some were service bias, and some were just plain ego driven. You may be surprised at how many were covered by secrecy for years and still do not get full historical coverage due to classification. However, with an 80-year reverse telescope some events appear far clearer today while some are still cloudy. This class will allow for class discussion. Attendance in Part I is not required to join Part II.

Hours: Sessions: 8 Fee: $69.00 Description:
Revisit many of the bands and songs that made the 1960s a period of fast-paced revolving music. AM radio and 45 RPM records were kings. Bands and artists seem to pop out of nowhere, then disappear into music obscurity. The song titles and music were sometimes as weird as the band names, but many well-known artists would come from this era. This 8-part course follows the years 1960 to 1969 with videos and a brief history of each song and band. Leave your penny loafers, tie-dyes, and paisley at home, but bring your moves and memories, as well as your notebook. Course recommended for music history buffs.

Hours: Sessions: 10 Fee: $159.00 Description:
This class will assess the conditions for the original popularity of the novel. The course texts will be placed against the industrial and political background of the period, the rapid growth of the middle-class reader, and contemporary responses to these narratives. Our discussions will focus on traditional interpretations of the novel in relation to how narrative voice, point of view, descriptive scenes (the compelling story), character development, theme, and rhetoric shape the social and moral universe of the novel. We will also discuss how reader-response (the reader in the text) shapes meaning; and how shifts in literary criticism and narrative affected the novel. At the conclusion of the course, students will have an opportunity to discover, debate, and define what (if anything) these works mean to a post-industrial, contemporary audience.

Chinese Revolutions: 20th Century Crises, Upheaval, and Renewal
