What Will I Learn?
AutoCAD is the most widely used computer-aided design (CAD) software for producing architectural, engineering, and construction drawings. Bridging the gap between learning AutoCAD and thinking like a design consultant, this program offers a professional learning experience that goes beyond software tutorials to teach you to confidently create skilled 2D drawings.
Get the most out of AutoCAD by learning to navigate the workspace and use essential drawing, editing, and viewing tools. Grow your creativity by organizing objects with layers and inserting reusable blocks, then bring your designs to life with text, hatching, and dimensions. Take your skills to the next level by working with constraints, advanced blocks, and custom templates. Learn to command powerful tools like zoom commands, QuickCalc, and dimensioning techniques to create professional, polished 2D designs.
How Will I Learn?
Through a series of hands-on, portfolio-ready projects, you will simulate real-world drafting workflows from architectural floor plans to drawing set production. You will also learn to collaborate like professional teams, utilizing external references, shared standards, and cloud-based tools to emulate vendor relationships and facilitate remote project delivery. Finally, the program will spark your entrepreneurial side by having you create your very own fictitious drafting company, allowing you to develop skills in company branding, file structure, and CAD standards. This class allows you the flexibility to enroll as an in-person student or attend online-live.
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course will give you the confidence to design with precision and efficiency.

- You will graduate with the skills and confidence to pursue entry-level design roles, consulting work, or further your education with 3D drafting study.
Upon Successful Completion, I Will Be Able To:
- Draft drawings using the Cartesian coordinate system, viewports, and layout tools
- Demonstrate basic drawing and editing commands
- Organize drawings using layers
- Create advanced object types such as arcs, polylines, polygons, and ellipses
- Set up and organize advanced layouts in AutoCAD
- Create and edit text in a drawing
- Apply dimensions to drawings
- Create and organize drawings using blocks and constraints
- Modify drawings using external references
- Use advanced Annotation and Dimension styles
- Demonstrate how to use advanced productivity tools
- Leverage AI tools to enhance layout logic, text standards, and title block automation
What Do I Need To Take the Class?
Textbooks are required and are available at the KSU Bookstore. Call (470) 578-6261 or visit https://bookstore.kennesaw.edu/ for pricing and availability. When contacting the bookstore, please identify yourself as a CPE student.
Working knowledge of computers and access to a laptop or desktop computer and the Internet are required. Access to AutoCAD software is included in the cost of the class. Demetrius Franklin
Demetrius Franklin is an award-winning mechanical designer with over 30 years of experience using AutoCAD software. He is an industry expert in two-dimensional and three-dimensional software, developing CAD projects for clients worldwide in the hydrogen, chemical, wastewater, refinery, steam, and power industries. Demetrius currently serves as BIM Coordinator for an engineering consulting firm in Johns Creek, GA, on a $550,000 million capital budget project, the largest in the company’s history. In addition to AutoCAD, Demetrius is proficient in AutoCAD Plant3D, BIM 360, Navisworks Bentley AutoPlant, and Hexagon CADWorx.
In addition to his love for CAD projects, Demetrius inspires the next generation of CAD designers to become part of the architectural, engineering, and construction communities to take up the mantle of designing challenging projects to improve the world’s infrastructure. Demetrius served in several leadership roles in the private sector, including cad manager, software administrator, and AutoCAD trainer. Demetrius was invited in 2011 by Power Magazine to conduct a live one-hour webinar on how engineering firms can generate ROI with CAD software. Later that year, Demetrius was interviewed by Power-Technology Magazine to compare the difference between 2D drafting and 3D Modeling.
Demetrius is passionate about education, serving on the Chattahoochee Tech Drafting Advisory Committee (2011) and the Georgia Piedmont Technical College Drafting Advisory Committee (2011) to help faculty develop curriculum to empower students to apply real-world design problems to classroom materials. Demetrius received a bachelor’s degree in management from Kennesaw State University. In the long term, Demetrius plans to seek his Ph.D. degree to enhance his research skills and inspire students full-time by engaging them before they enter the workforce.
