AutoCAD vs. Revit : Which Should You Learn First?
If you are thinking about a career in architecture, engineering, or construction, you have probably run into two software names again and again: AutoCAD and Revit. Both are widely used in the field, but they are built for different purposes. Understanding what each one does can help you decide where to start.
AutoCAD: The Foundation of Drafting

AutoCAD is one of the most widely used computer-aided design programs for creating architectural, engineering, and construction drawings. It is built around drafting, meaning you create precise 2D drawings using lines, shapes, and dimensions, or add 3D elements for more detailed visualization.
Kennesaw State University’s Community and Professional Education (CPE) offers two certificates that build on each other. The AutoCAD 2D Certificate covers the core skills needed to produce professional 2D drawings, including navigating the workspace, organizing objects with layers, and using drawing and editing tools. The AutoCAD 3D Certificate builds on those skills with advanced 2D commands and hands-on 3D drawing techniques, including rendering, materials, and complete drawing sets.
Because AutoCAD focuses on individual drawings rather than a connected model, it is often the starting point for people who are new to design software.

Revit: Building a Complete Model
Revit works differently. Instead of creating separate drawings, it uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) to build a single 3D model of an entire project. Every wall, door, window, and roof exists as part of one connected model, so when you make a change, it updates everywhere that element appears.
CPE’s Revit Architecture Essentials Certificate teaches you to build a full 3D architectural project model from the ground up. You will learn to create walls, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, roofs, and stairs; work with levels and grids; add components such as furniture and equipment; and set up sheets with text, dimensions, details, tags, and schedules.
Because Revit centers on collaboration and a complete model, it is often introduced after learners already understand basic drafting concepts, though some students choose to start with Revit directly if their career goals point that way.
So, Which Should You Learn First?
There is no single right answer. It depends on your goals.
If you want to build a strong foundation in drafting fundamentals, or if your target role emphasizes 2D construction documents, starting with AutoCAD 2D and then moving to AutoCAD 3D gives you a solid progression.
If your goal is architectural design specifically, and you want experience with the BIM workflow that many architecture firms use daily, Revit may be the better starting point.
Many professionals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry end up learning both. AutoCAD skills remain valuable for detailed 2D drawings and documentation, while Revit skills are increasingly expected for architectural design and collaboration.
