The EKG Technician Certificate includes theory and hands-on instruction during the seven-week program. Students will learn anatomy of the cardiovascular system, electrophysiology, lead placement, types of rhythms, AV blocks, and myocardial infarction. Students will also learn the basics of HIPAA security and privacy as it relates to the profession. Hands-on training in 12-lead EKG placement, heart rate calculation, and rhythm strip interpretation are also performed. Individuals interested in starting a career in the medical field, nursing or physician assistant school applicants, prospective patient care technicians, current nurses, or those looking to develop skills may benefit from this program. This certificate program will assist students in preparing for the National Healthcareer Association Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam. Exam fee and textbook are additional. A textbook is required for this course and is available at the KSU Main Campus Bookstore website: bookstore.kennesaw.edu. Call 470-578-6261 for questions, pricing, and availability. Define medical terms and abbreviations related to the cardiovascular system and electrocardiograms

Explain basic EKG tracing, rate, rhythm, and abnormalities

Administer an electrocardiogram
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of computers and access to computer and Internet are required.
Note: This is a hybrid class. You will receive a detailed schedule noting synchronous and asynchronous sessions in Moodle. You will receive access to Moodle 2 days before the class starts.
Those interested in obtaining a Patient Care Technician (CPCT) national certification may be eligible to take the national exam upon successful completion of the following certificate programs offered by KSU: Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Experience may be substituted in lieu of a KSU Certificate and will be evaluated by the testing organization on an individual basis as criteria for meeting the exam eligibility requirements.
