Medical Office Assistants are immersed in the daily front office operations of physician, dental, chiropractic, and veterinary offices, as well as medical centers, nursing homes, and clinics. Medical Office Assistants may handle responsibilities for patient scheduling, patient check in and out, practice communications, reimbursements, and records management.
The Medical Office Assistant Certificate includes theory and hands-on computer instruction during the four-month program. Students will learn human anatomy and medical terminology by body system, patient reception and processing, office operations, electronic medical records, basic diagnostic and procedural coding, health insurance claims, and practice management. Students will also learn the basics of HIPAA security and privacy as it relates to the profession. Hands-on training in electronic medical records, medical practice management software, patient billing, and insurance claims are also performed. Individuals interested in a career in the medical field or those looking to develop healthcare related skills may benefit from this program. This certificate program will assist students in preparing for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam. Exam fee and textbooks are additional. This program is the recommended prerequisite for the classroom-based Medical Coding Specialist Certificate program.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of computers and access to a laptop or desktop computer and Internet are required.
Note: This is a hybrid class. You will receive a detailed schedule noting synchronous and asynchronous sessions in Moodle. You will receive access to Moodle 2 days before the class starts.

Describe the members of the healthcare team and their area of responsibility in the healthcare environment.

Identify the different styles and types of communication in the healthcare setting and recognize communication barriers.

Differentiate between legal, ethical, and moral issues affecting healthcare.

Describe appointment scheduling guidelines and the office policies and protocols for handling appointments, reception, operations, and communications.

Identify the differences between paper and electronic medical records and the general principles of medical record documentation.

Explain the legalities and contents of medical records as it relates to information management and privacy.

Recognize coding procedures for both the ICD-10-CM diagnostic and CPT procedural coding systems.

Explain the procedure for determining and verifying insurance benefits and processing claims.

Identify common procedures for effective financial and practice management, including banking, human resources, marketing, and customer service.
- Identify organs and structures of the body system.

Define word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms used to describe organs and structures.

Describe primary functions; common diseases; common diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; and common abbreviations/symbols related to systems and body structures.
- Operate a patient billing and accounting software in a medical office environment.
Special notice: This class will be delivered online. You will need access to an internet connection that remains stable for the duration of the class. Though a chat feature is available, a microphone is preferred. For most productive audio/video participation, a webcam and/or headset are encouraged. Virtual classes may be recorded.
