How an Author Grew His Book Business with Social Media Marketing Training
As an accomplished fantasy author, J.W. Webb is no stranger to storytelling. Born in England with a deep fascination for the Middle Ages, Webb has authored more than a dozen fantasy novels, including audiobooks and box sets available on major online platforms.
But while writing came naturally, social media marketing did not.
From Storytelling to Strategic Marketing
“Growing up so close to that scene of ancient carnage awarded me a fascination for all things Dark Age,” Webb shared. “I’d fallen victim to a weird and random imagination, resulting in a love of epic stories and epic storytelling.”
Although he devoted significant time to writing and research, Webb recognized that publishing success requires more than creativity—it requires visibility. Social media became a necessary part of growing his author brand.
After previously completing the Web Design Certificate at Kennesaw State University’s College of Graduate and Professional Education (CGPE), Webb decided to enroll in the Social Media Marketing Certificate program.
Practical Skills with Immediate Impact
“I started with the Web Design course and was impressed with how professional KSU was,” said Webb. “So I looked into the Social Media course and found that it was easy to work into my schedule.”
The program provided practical, hands-on training that Webb could immediately apply to his business.
“What I learned in the course, I now use every day,” he explained. “I’m constantly marketing my novels using the strategies I gained in this course. I learned which platforms best support my goals, and I’m even exploring TikTok. #BookTok is great for writers, and I’m diving into that space.”
The course not only provided technical knowledge, but also the confidence to navigate platforms strategically—without feeling pressured to follow trends that didn’t align with his brand.
Expanding Reach Through Community
Webb credits social media with helping him connect to audiences and professional networks he otherwise would not have reached.
“I recently met business writers I would never have met if not for a Facebook group I discovered,” he said. “Even if you shy away from social media personally, you need this skill to grow your business.”
